CITEM is the result of the merger of two agencies, namely:
Philippine Trade Exhibition Center (PTEC) created under EO 989 dated 10 October 1984, that is, to institutionalize the holding of trade exhibition for the promotion of locally manufactured products and implement projects designed to upgrade the quality of such products to international standards, coordinate raw material sourcing, develop markets therefore and provide assistance to Philippine manufacturers in general.
Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions, Inc. (CITEM, Inc), a corporation registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on 20 January 1983, a subsidiary of PITC which was an attached agency of the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
On 27 February 1987, E.O. 133 was issued Reorganizing the Department of Trade and Industry and its attached agencies. Under Sec. 18 (V) of said E.O. PTEC is merged with CITEM, with the latter as the surviving entity.
Shortly after, on 24 July 1987, E.O. 242 was issued amending Sec. 18 (V) of E.O 133 as follows: “(v) The Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions, Inc. is hereby merged with the Philippine Trade Exhibition Center. The latter shall be the surviving entity and is hereby renamed “Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions.”
