FTI, formerly known as the Greater Manila Terminal Food Market, Inc. (GMTFM), was organized on 30 April 1968 under the management of Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) for the purpose of stabilizing prices of commodities through an efficient agricultural marketing system. It was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on 3 May 1968.
In 1973, GMTFM was converted into an agro-industrial commercial estate and subsequently expanded its service capability to include retailing, transport services, and real estate leasing in the form of long and medium term leases. FTI was adopted as its new corporate name on 27 March 1974. On April 1979, FTI was assigned by the DBP to Human Settlements Development Corporation (HSDC) and later became a subsidiary of the National Food Authority (NFA) on 14 January 1981. Based on the latest General Information Sheet (GIS) filed by FTI with the SEC for FY 2011, the NFA owns ninety-nine percent (99%) of the corporation.
